Zoning Systems 101

There are many elements to consider when building a residential or commercial space. One of the most important is the HVAC system and whether you’ll include zoning systems. Keep reading to learn the basics of zoning systems and their benefits:

What is a zoning system?

A zoning system is one that separates parts of the home or commercial building into different zones. Each zone has its own thermostat so that different parts of the building can be heated or cooled as needed. The ductwork in zoning systems feature dampers that are electronically-controlled. These dampers are used to control the flow of hot and cold air that circulates throughout the house. Each zone’s thermostat can control the dampers in that area, telling them to open to allow more cool air in or close when the desired temperature has been reached.

What are the benefits of a zoning system?

Whether you’re building a home or commercial space, you should consider including a zoning system in your construction plans. These systems allow you to regulate the temperature in different parts of the building, instead of choosing one temperature for the whole space. A zoning system can be beneficial in multi-level buildings that might suffer from hot and cold spots. Each level will be part of its own zone, so temperature can be regulated level by level for optimum comfort. Zoning systems are also great choices in home with families who have different temperature preferences. If some members of the family prefer a warm home while others like it cooler, you can design the home to have different zones that will let each family member pick his or her desired temperature.
