How Should I Set My Thermostat When I’m Not Home in Summer?
You might think it’s a good idea to set your air conditioner’s thermostat at a high temperature to conserve energy when you’re away, but that’s harder on your unit once you return. Your air conditioner will have to work more to cool your house, which can actually mean a larger electric bill. If you’re going to be away for an extended time, we recommend setting the A/C to no more than five degrees from the setting you use when you’re at home. For instance, if you normally set the temperature at home to 75, you would set it to 80. More than a five-degree difference may affect items in your home, and it causes higher energy use when the air conditioning unit is trying to cool down your house.
