New construction homes are exciting for a number of reasons. One of them is the ability to customize the home to suit the exact preferences of the home buyer. When it’s time to select a cooling system for a new construction home, there are a few factors to consider.
Prioritizing the Comfort of the Family
In many parts of the country, satisfactory comfort is achievable with removable window air conditioners. But in Arizona, where families face scorching temperatures every summer, window air conditioners are typically considered to be insufficient. A central air conditioner is a more effective way to cool down the whole house and keep the family comfortable. A central AC system can also enhance the marketability of the home and raise its property value.
Choosing an Energy-Efficient Cooling System
Energy efficiency is a major consideration when selecting a cooling system. New cooling systems are far more energy efficient than those found in older homes. Contractors recommend selecting a system with the Energy Star rating. In addition, consider its seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) rating. Energy-efficient central AC units have a high SEER rating. In the Southwest, the minimum SEER rating is 14. This rating is applicable to all types of cooling systems, including central air. For greater cost savings over time, select a cooling system that’s rated at higher than 14.
Establishing Multiple Cooling Zones
In some new construction homes, the family’s lifestyle and preferences may be best served by a ductless mini split, rather than a central air conditioner. This system offers excellent flexibility for cooling individual rooms. It’s ideal when the home has some rooms that are used less frequently than others.
