The HVAC industry is in the middle of the biggest refrigerant shift since the R-22 phase-out, and it affects every new residential and commercial system sold going forward. B & J Refrigeration explains what it means for you, without the jargon.
What are A2L refrigerants?
A2L refrigerants are the new generation replacing R-410A in air conditioners and heat pumps. Options like R-32 and R-454B carry a global warming potential roughly 75 percent lower than R-410A. These refrigerants have a low burning velocity and require specific conditions, like sustained heat and poor ventilation, to ignite at all.
Why is the industry moving away from R-410A?
Under federal environmental rules, manufacturers can no longer build new residential and light commercial systems using refrigerants above a set global warming potential threshold. R-410A doesn’t meet that threshold, so equipment makers have shifted their production lines to A2L refrigerants. If you’re buying new equipment now, whether residential or commercial, it’s going to run on one of these newer refrigerants.
Does this mean older equipment needs to be replaced?
No. If your current system runs on R-410A, it is not being pulled off the market or declared unsafe. Servicing existing R-410A equipment remains completely normal, and our technicians will continue supporting those systems for years. A2L requirements apply to new equipment manufacturing and installation, not to systems already running. An older system in good working condition doesn’t need to be swapped out.
How does the transition affect installation and technician training?
A2L systems use different components, refrigerant handling procedures, and safety equipment than R-410A systems, including leak detection systems and A2L-rated tools. You cannot simply convert an existing R-410A unit to run on the new refrigerant; it requires equipment designed and listed specifically for A2L use. That means technicians need specialized training and certification to install and service this equipment correctly.
What should you actually do with this information?
If you’re planning a new install, whether it’s a home AC replacement or a commercial system upgrade, you’re going to end up with A2L equipment regardless of which manufacturer you choose. If you’re maintaining an older R-410A system, there’s no urgency to replace it purely because of this shift. The right move depends on your specific equipment, its condition, and your plans for the property.
