Packaged Systems vs. Split Systems: Which One Is Right for You?

If you are preparing to install a new cooling system in your home, you’ll need to choose between a packaged system and a split system. Both types of systems are common, efficient, and effective in a wide range of homes. However, it is important to understand the differences between them so that you can choose the right system for your needs. Whether you are installing a new system in an older home or installing an air conditioner in your new construction home, choosing the right system is essential for optimizing your energy usage and your comfort.

A Closer Look at Packaged Systems

Packaged cooling and heating systems are designed to house all elements of the system in one outdoor cabinet. This unit is connected directly to your home’s ductwork, which moves air throughout the home and then returns it to the outdoor unit. Packaged systems offer an efficient, streamlined design, and they are generally quieter because all system components are outside of your home.

A Closer Look at Split Systems

With a split cooling system, you’ll still have an outdoor unit that houses the condenser and compressor, but the evaporator coil and air handler will be housed in an indoor cabinet that’s typically found in an attic or crawlspace. The outdoor unit connects to the indoor unit through a special copper tube, and then the indoor unit connects to your home’s ductwork. Alternatively, you may invest in a mini split system, which does not feature ductwork. Instead, you will have one or several air handlers that blow cool air into the home.

Choosing the Right System for Your Home

The existing cooling and heating infrastructure of your home is an important consideration when installing a new system. If you already have a packaged system, it will likely be more cost-effective to replace it with the same type of system. The same is true if you already have a split system. However, you may choose to install a mini split if you are building a home addition, ADU, home office, home gym, or converted garage. A mini split unit will allow you to cool these rooms without connecting them to your home’s existing ductwork.

The size of your home is also an important factor in choosing the right system. Smaller homes benefit from the compact, efficient design of a packaged system because these systems do not require indoor storage space for any system components.
